Sentencing brings calls for ‘corporate manslaughter’ charge

Aboriginal elder Mr Ward died in custody in 2008, while being transported across remote WA in the back of a prison van. Earlier this year the WA Department of Corrective Services and private security company G4S were both fined $285 000, and last week one of the drivers received a $9000 fine, for breaching Occupational Health and Safety legislation. But MARC NEWHOUSE, Deputy Chair of the WA Deaths in Custody Watch Committee is calling for new legislation to create a charge of ‘corporate manslaughter’ to allow companies to be held responsible when their actions lead to a death.
