Senate provides double D trigger
Today is the day that Prime Minister Turnbull will make good on his threat to cross-bench Senators to call a double dissolution election for not passing the ABCC construction industry watchdog legislation. With no wriggle room left, there appears to be no option but a July 2 election given the constitutional conditions that a double dissolution must be held 6 months prior to an end of term. If he left it to the following week or later, it must be a regular election, and troublesome cross bench Senators would still be in place. Thus the following weekend would be too late. It appears this carefully constructed plan is dependent upon a well received budget, as this could be the jump start the Government needs to arrest its slide in popularity according to the polls.
