2006 has seen major legal changes for members of the australian arts and media industries with the loosening of the much-awaited new defamation laws riding on the back of controversial sedition laws. Hosted by the Arts Law Centre of Australia and Frankel Lawyers, a panel of experts and industry representatvies including NSW Attorney-General Bob Debus, Former Justice of the Supreme Court David Levine, and Sydney Morning Herald Journalist David Marr, debated the impact of defamation and sedition laws on artists and the ‘meaning’ of their work. This report begins with Julian Burnside QC, with his take on the sedition laws.
