Securing our past by embracing technology
Libraries and museums across the world are using digitisation to record their collections in a bid to ensure access by as many people as possible without risking damage to the original items. The work engages a specialised workforce to handle sometimes delicate and often very old materials and capture them in detailed records that can then be shared with the public.
It’s underpinned by specialised software that identifies any deterioration in digital data once those records have been made, to ensure they don’t become obsolete as technology moves on. The State Library of South Australia is one organisation that has invested significant time and effort into digitisation of their collection.
