Rising sea levels can threaten island life in a number of ways. King tides break through sea walls, waves lap closer to sacred sites and homes, and increased soil salinity makes it difficult to grow food. Kiribati, Tuvalu and other Pacific island nations are fighting this encroaching tide, but so are Australian communities. Some question whether the Australian Government has advocated internationally while neglecting its responsibilities at home, in the Torres Strait.
