Beneath the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, an experiment has been taking place in an underground plant to verify the existence of what’s been described as the most sought-after particle in modern physics. The existence of the so-called “Higgs Boson” is being tested for by smashing together atom particles near the speed of light.

Last December, physicists had observed behavior that suggested the Higgs might exist. Particle collision restarted at the Large Hadron Collider last week after months of maintenance work to accelerate the speed.Vincent Smith is a visiting fellow at the school of physics at the University of New South Wales. He explained to Biwa Kwan what the imminent verdict on the Higgs’ existence could mean.
