This week, the Bennlong Society’s Dr Gary Johns has called for schools in remote Indigenous communties to be closed as part of his Remote Schools and Real Economies paper. Some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and educators are against the plan, seeing it as part of the greater scheme of assimilation. Batchelor Institute academics Anthony Fraser and Dr Howard Sercombe have heavily critised the method and ideas of the research. The residents of Elcho Island have joined in this campaign with a celebration, as the Gali winku community launched a new secondary school on Monday.
