Installation view Sappers & Shrapnel: Contemporary Art and the Art of the Trenches, featuring Richard Lewer, Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide, 2016

Sappers & Shrapnel is a contemporary art project inspired by the little-known and undervalued art form known as trench art.

Trench art is artistic practice at it’s most vulnerable: painting, sculpture and more all made by soldiers and servicemen during war time.

South Australian Art Gallery Assistant Director, Artistic Programs and Sappers & Shrapnel Curator Lisa Slade has brought together artists from around the country to create their reactions to some of Australia’s historical trench art.
