The Iraqi court currently trying the country’s former dictator has added a new list of criminal charges against Saddam Hussein, namely the role he is alleged to have played in persecuting and killing Kurdish Iraqis in the 1980s. Some 18 years ago, Saddam waged a military campaign against Iraqi Kurdish civilians. The outcome was extreme, with at least 50,000 civilians were killed and 2,000 villages destroyed. While the Kurdish community has welcomed the new charges of crimes against humanity, there seems to be very little media focus on those who helped arm Saddam during the 80s, namely, several Western nations. Sureya Sauyadi, a Kurdish doctor welcomes the prospect of justice being served on Saddam Hussein, but believes the trial proceedings have become a mockery.
