Sacred sites desecrated while court reserves decision

In Central New South Wales – an aboriginal group is concerned that the ongoing wait for a court resolution could cost traditional owners several sacred sites. Five months ago a full bench of the Federal Court reserved it’s decision on a dispute between the Mooka Traditional owners and the Wiradjuri Elders Council. The Mooka Traditional owners are challenging the validity of an agreement that was signed by the Wiradjuri elders allowing inspection of sacred sites and mining by Barrick Gold to continue at Lake Cowal. But Mooka Chairman Neville Williams has told Craig Egert he’s appalled that mining has been allowed to continue despite legal action being taken.
