SA pledges Desal plant but what about the alternatives?
The SA government has announced that two desalination plants will commence construction to be completed in around 5 years time with one plant costing tax payers around $1.4 billion. Water rates also are set to rise. Criticism over the price and the environmental location has been consistently voiced throughout the country. Concerns over whether the plant will serve regional areas not just cities and coastal centres have also been raised. Karlene Maywald, SA minister for Water Security also spoke to The Wire about the Desalination plans. But has the government looked into alternative water sources? Storm Water treatment is one such alternative. Tom Henderson spoke to Peter Dillon from the CSIRO who has done extensive research on the matter.
