It was a hot and humid day in Sydney that welcomed the second ‘Rock the Block’, off Everleigh St, in Redfern on Saturday. This time called “Youth Rock the Block”, the event aim to repeat the success of the last event in May, which attracted mainstream media attention to raise money for a dance studio underneath the well-known Tony Mundine Gym. It was a quieter event this time round, with a sweltering heat that drove the rest of Sydney to the coastline. Amongst the spectators sitting in the midday sun were the figures from the Aboriginal Housing Company who are involved in a heated political battle with the NSW State Government to retain the land where “Rock the Block” took place. The Wire had a yarn with the community leaders who are determined for their vision of the Block to go ahead, despite the fact the State Government’s own, very different plans have already been approved.
