State governments such as NSW and Victoria have signed regional forest agreements, protecting large amounts of old growth forests, environmentalists on the east coast remain concerned that these agreements are not providing enough protection. With this is in mind, on Sunday a group of protestors headed to a wood-chipping mill in Eden, NSW, with the aim of throwing a spotlight on the practice of turning old growth forests into woodchips and eventually paper. The weekend protests is just the first stage in a campaign that groups in NSW and Victoria are ramping up ahead of state elections in both jurisdictions. In a minute we will hear from the company being accused of wood chipping old growth forests for export but first, the Wire spoke earlier with Luke Chamberlain, a forest campaigner with Environment East Gippsland. He explained how the protection of old growth forests differs around the country.
