A massive amount of water has been released into the Snowy River over the past few days, for the first time in over forty years. The aim is to restore the health of the river and surrounding ecosystem, which has suffered since the construction of the Snowy Mountains Hydro scheme in the 60’s. Progress is being made as the public company Water for Rivers, which was set up by the New South Wales, Victorian and Commonwealth governments, sets out to recover two hundred and eighty two gigalitres of water for the Snowy and Murray Rivers. It’s been a long struggle for community groups campaigning for a minimum of 28 percent to be released into the river and there is still some way to go.
