Resumption of whaling feared
You might not know it, but the fate of the world’s whale population hangs in the balance. The International Whaling Commission is set to meet in a fortnight and there are fears that the pro-whaling lobby will have its way, which would see the resumption of large-scale commercial whaling. Dr Robert Harcourt, Director of Marine Science at Macquarie University also spoke with The Wire. Australia’s Environment Minister Ian Campbell is currently visiting a number of Pacific Islands thought to be at risk of supporting a lift on the 20–year ban. Steve Shall-horn, the CEO of Greenpeace Australia spoke to The Wire about what we can expect if the pro-whaling lobby achieve a majority.
