Researchers from Australian and International universities have come up with a set of targets to best conserve the greatest number of ecoregions across the globe.
Ecoregions are large areas containing similar kinds of environments.
Currently countries who are parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity are required to set aside 17 per cent of their land area to protect biodiversity, but this figure is expected to increase as parties to the convention are scheduled to meet this year.
