Reprieve for Baby Asha but Nauru still looms
Baby Asha is spending her first night in community detention, after being released from Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in Brisbane and moved into private accommodation. Immigration Minister Peter Dutton made the announcement after strong community pressure to allow the baby, who was being treated for burns sustained on Nauru, to stay in community detention. It is unclear how long Baby Asha will be allowed to stay in Australia. Monday saw Independent MP Andrew Wilkie failing in his bid to have parliament censure Immigration Minister Peter Dutton for implying that “Baby Asha was deliberately harmed” so that she would be brought from Nauru to Australia for treatment.
