The Kimberley region of Western Australia, has the dubious honour of having the highest number of indigenous people in jail across the country, with the majority of inmates being aboriginal. But a new report produced by nine members of the local indigenous community, aims to reverse this trend, and make prisons a place of rehabilitation rather than a hell hole that inmates return to again and again. The report by the Kimberley Aboriginal Reference Group, has outlined seven recommendations. The Western Australian Government has today promised to respond quickly to a report. The chair of the group, Peter Yu gave The Wire his take on why most indigenous inmates find themselves spending time inside.
