Regional and rural journalists defiant on resurrecting and preserving local media outlets

The astronomical economic crisis sweeping throughout the world due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has caused many Australian rural and regional media businesses including community radio stations, television networks and daily newspaper mastheads to suspend all operations and lay off most of their workforce.

But a few communities are standing defiant against these shutdowns, with Broken Hill’s Barrier Daily Truth, Mildura’s Sunraysia Daily and Gawler’s own Bunyip newspaper staff and journalists volunteering to resurrect and preserve their publications while keeping printing facilities operating to meet huge demand from local readers supporting them.
