Refugee Week kicks off on 17 June, but it hasn’t exactly been off to a smooth start, as the Israeli government has ordered the deportation of thousands of African refugees to “protect their citizens”. It’s also the twentieth anniversary of the mandatory detention policy here in Australia. With all this negative media attention, it is fitting that the theme for this year’s Refugee Week is Restoring Hope. Refugee Week will have many events across Australia to raise awareness of refugees and asylum seekers coming to this country and the positive impact they have on our community.
