Refugee Utopia
It’s World Refugee Day and the Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone says we should be patting ourselves on the back for taking in 13,000 refugees and people in humanitarian need, a year. She says Australia is one of the top three countries per capita, along with the US and Canada, for providing comprehensive assistance to these groups of vulnerable people. But when the proposed Migration Amendment Bill has John Howard’s backbench in a tizz and refugee advocate groups protesting across the nation, we have to ask ourselves – is Australia really doing the best it can to accomodate refugees? The Wire decided to asked people to dream the dream, and imagine an Australia where refugees were supported to newfound levels, starting with Sylvia Winton from the Refugee Council of Australia.
