Refugee advocates slam return to remote, indefinite detention

As Christmas island reaches capacity, the Federal Government has announced that it will re-open the Curtin detention centre in the remote north of Western Australia. Asylum seekers from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan who’ve had their applications suspended by the government will be moved to the centre. Refugee advocates say that the decision to reopen the Curtin centre harks back to the Howard government strategy of using punishing conditions to deter people from seeking asylum in Australia.
