With a new government in power, Australians who support reconciliation will be hoping for the wheels to start turning again. Critics have argued that Howard’s refusal to say “sorry” to the Stolen Generations, the abolition of ATSIC and the intervention in the Northern Territory has put reconciliation back several years. Today, Prime Minister elect Kevin Rudd said that his government would apologise to Indigenous Australians in his first term. So does this prove the new government will usher in a new era for indigenous affairs?
