Reconciliation and the Republic
An Australian Republic and Aboriginal Reconciliation were two touchstone liberal issues of the 1990’s, but they didn’t have much to do with eachother. We were told the republic involved changing to an Australian head-of-state and nothing else. Meanwhile millions of people were marching for reconciliation all over the country. Historian Mark McKenna has written a new book arguing that the links between Reconciliation and Republicanism are fundamental. It’s called This Country: A Reconciled Republic, and it will be launched tomorrow night in Canberra by former ATSIC chairman Gatjil Djerrkura. He spoke to Jay Lamey.
