Melbourne's Reclaim The Night march along Sydney Rd has particular poignancy this year following the tragic rape and murder of Jill Meagher who was abducted walking along the very same road.In September, tens of thousands of people marched down Sydney Rd in her honour. The march will protest violence like what befell Jill but also how the media and society in general treats female victims of violence and harassment.Organiser of the march Natalie Pestana says she and friend were inspired to hold the event after reading an article by writer Clementine Ford.Ford's article written before Jill Meagher was found critiqued media and online speculation about Meagher's lifestyle and her actions leading up to her disappearance.Ford says the speculation was merely a "false veneer of concern people hide behind in order to morally chastise and scold young women for not understanding that the rules are different for them".(Photo of Reclaim the Night, Palmerston, 2009 by Paul Grey on Flickr).

On Saturday the 20th, Sydney Rd in Brunswick, Melbourne will again be filled with people marching to protest violence against women. Reclaim the Night running since the 1970’s is an international event against gendered harassment and violence against women.
