Rare-earth campaigner returns home to evict Lynas
Following on from last weeks story about activist Natalie Lowrie, who was arrested in Malaysia at a protest against a rare earth processing plant, we take a further look at the campaign. The plant is run by Australian company Lynas, who mines rare earth and takes it to Malaysia to be processed. Rare earths are used in various green technologies and also consumer products such as smart phones. However their processing can produce hazardous radioactive wastes.
This is why the Malaysian community have been campaigning against the plant. Natalie Lowrey was arrested at a protest along with 15 Malaysians. She was detained for six days, before being released without charge. She returned to Australia yesterday and today visited Lynas headquarters in Sydney to serve them an eviction notice.
