More Indigenous people are being jailed in Australia even though they aren’t committing more crimes, according to a report released this week by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research. It found a 37% increase in Australia’s Indigenous prison population between 2001 and 2008, compared with an 8% increase in the non-Indigenous population. In New South Wales, the increase was even higher at 48%, compared to 7% for non-Indigenous people. There are suggestions that systemic racism is behind this increase.
