Civil rights groups in Queensland are unhappy with new public nuisance fines. The state government has announced a trial for on-the-spot fines for such offences – as opposed to people being charged and facing court. The announcement comes hand in hand with new public urination laws. Opponents of the new scheme say it will open up floodgates for overzealous policing of trivial offences.
