Over the past few months, The Wire has profiled Indigenous candidates representing various parties, running for both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Today, we spoke to Queensland’s lead senate candidate for the Socialist Alliance, Sam Watson. Fellow Indigenous candidate Nicole Clevens is the party’s number two candidate on the Queensland senate ticket. Mr Watson is a well-known Aboriginal leader and community activist based in Brisbane, and spoke to Tiga Bayles from 98.9 FM. Mr Watson says Indigenous people have the power to change the political landscape in Australia on October 9. Although he admits the major parties will be hold the power in the lower house, Mr Watson says minor parties are vital to maintain the watchdog role of the Senate.
