Push for refugees to be able to review negative ASIO assessment
There are some people in immigration detention who currently have little to no prospect of ever being released. Those are the people who ASIO has deemed to pose some kind of security threat. The Greens have announced that they intend to introduce legislation to allow for greater public scrutiny and oversight of ASIO’s decisions. Often they’ve been found to be genuine refugees – in other words they face persecution in the country they came from, and they face indefinite detention here. The government also says it’s looking to make changes to the system, but it’s not saying yet what changes are being considered.
In the meantime some refugees with a negative security assessment have already been in detention for years, and some of them appear to have lost hope of living normal lives again.
