Push for an end to intersex childhood surgery
Parents of intersex children, that is, children born with both male and female reproductive organs or chromosomes, face a difficult decision when negotiating gender identity issues for their young children. Intersex lobby and support groups argue that cultural attitudes are governing surgical decisions for intersex children. Peak medical body, the AMA, says doctors do not make surgical decisions lightly and rigorous consultation is made before any medical procedure.
A Senate Committee Hearing held last month, heard the varying medical, social and psychological arguments both for and against gender and sex based surgery of this kind on children.
