Public Transport Futures
If you’re getting ready to head home after a long day at work, you know there’s nothing worse than standing at the bus-stop and watching packed buses pass by with no room for you. Or maybe you’re sitting in your car, going nowhere in a traffic jam. As many of Australia’s major cities continue to grow, these problems are becoming more and more familiar. So where do we look for innovative solutions? Recently, the Western Australian government finalised Australia’s first sustainability strategy, of which public transport is a major component. Professor Peter Newman from Murdoch University was responsible for developing that strategy, and James Fletcher spoke to him about some of the factors driving the need for better public transport.
