Proposed mining tax could provide certainty for indigenous landholders

The federal government has made itself pretty unpopular with business by flagging a possible 40 percent resources tax on mining companies. But could this be an opportunity to replace the negotiations and court cases that currently happen between mining companies and traditional aboriginal owners, and spread that mining money fairly across indigenous Australia. Native title lawyer Steven Kenny thinks so and also believes that rather than benefit one claimant group lucky enough to have minerals on their land, the money could go into a fund that could be shared equally between Aboriginal groups across Australia.
