Governments love being tough on crime because its such a vote winner, but the problem is that it makes life hard for offenders, especially young offenders. A report released by the Youth Affairs Council of South Australia today has found young people are actually committing crimes to get back into prison because there’s so little support to help them rehabilitate. At least in prison they can get food and a roof over their head. Jenifer Duncan from YACSA explained that recent government initiatives aren’t addressing the base causes of the problem and Leigh Garrett from OARS followed up by highlighting some practical issues.
