In Brisbane, the Murri Watch group has been visiting indigenous prisoners in police watch-houses since 1995. Established as a result of the Deaths in Custody Royal Commission, Murri Watch is able to bail out indigenous prisoners, usually picked up by police for minor infringements like drunkenness. Police are often also willing to release people into the care of Murri Watch. But the Group has taken their efforts to a new level with the development of a bus service – launched with praise today by Opposition Indigenous Affairs spokesman Kerry O’Brien.
