The government is under increasing pressure this week over its asylum seeker policy, after Wednesday’s High Court ruling and this morning’s leak of a cabinet document arguing for more stringent monitoring of refugees. Labor Shadow Immigration Minister Richard Marles has criticised the document leak saying it could take Australia back to a “dark past” in its immigration policy. It comes as churches across the country have offered to provide ‘sanctuary’ to the 260 people including 37 babies now under threat of deportation to Nauru.
