As refugees continue to pour out of Syria at an alarming rate pressure is mounting on the Australian government to take its share. Today the Opposition called for a one-off additional 10,000 refugees in our in our humanitarian intake plus $100 million to help Syria and the region. The Greens say we should take 20,000 refugees and provide $150 million in aid. The Prime Minister says while we will take more Syrian refugees it won’t be in addition to the the numbers we already take, and he will wait for Immigration Minister Peter Dutton to conclude his meetings with the UNHCR in Europe before making further commitments.
