Only four people still speak Putijarra, making it one of the world’s rarest languages. So linguists in the Pilbara in north-west Western Australia are trying to keep it alive. From stories told by local speakers, the Wangka Maya Language Centre has compiled a 100 page Putijarra word-list. Wangka Maya Aboriginal Language Centre’s manager is Fran Haintz.
