Pre-school education program a triumph for disadvantaged communities
A report from Parliament House today announced that a pilot program providing early intervention education for underprivileged children has been an unprecedented success.
The Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters (HIPPY) was allotted thirty five and a half million dollars to provide tutors for pre-school children in fifty disadvantaged areas across Australia. The tutors were chosen from their local communities. These underprivileged children, who used to fall behind in school, are now performing at the Australian average for reading and maths.Experts are calling for the government to allocate more time and effort towards similar early intervention programs.
