Positive Aboriginal identity crucial to academic success

A new study has found that high achieving Aboriginal students are likely to have a strong, positive sense of cultural identity. Noting that the majority of Indigenous education research focused on underachievement, Wiradjuri and Gamilaroi woman Lynette Riley decided to interview Aboriginal students testing in the top 10-25% to ascertain the reasons behind their success.

Ms. Riley found was that supportive parents and culturally competent teachers instilled positive Aboriginal identity in students, which contributed to their academic success.
