The 2017 Budget has taken a distinctively punitive attitude to welfare recipients, flagging random drug testing linked to benefits, demerit points for not turning up to interviews and an expectation that anyone wanting benefits, even parents of newborns, must put in long hours each week looking for work. This is in spite of a steady jobless rate and widespread underemployment. Pas Forgione and River Amaru from the Anti-Poverty network came into the Wire studios to discuss how the budget is set to affect the less fortunate.
