Air pollution is a fact of life when living in the city. A recent parliamentary report found that breathing in may be doing more damage to our health than we think. Up to 1500 people die every year from the effects air pollution, and many more suffer on a daily basis, and that’s just in Australia’s largest city Sydney. NSW Greens MLC Sylvia Hale believes that the solution starts with regulation, calling for an end to the self-monitoring by industry of air pollution. She says a recent NSW parliamentary inquiry into the issue didn’t go far enough in addressing the community’s concerns on air quality. Industry is still one of the biggest culprits, contributing to almost 50% of particle pollution in Sydney. The Wire spoke to Sylvia Hale about what she thinks about the current situation of self-regulation.
