Domestic violence groups say the police still need to improve when it comes to helping victims of assault and abuse in the home. While most police are thoroughly trained to handle domestic violence situations, some activists say the help available is not always sufficient. The NSW Women’s Refuge Movement, which represents 55 shelters for women and children around the state, says it’s not uncommon for women to have difficulty getting appropriate assistance. They reported cases where women were blamed for instigating the violence they were attempting to escape.
