As Australia’s election campaign rolls on, to our north in Papua New Guinea, there are signs that all is not well with the democratic process. Several PNG Ministers defected to the opposition this week ahead of a planned motion of no confidence in Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare. The coalition government responded by suspending parliament until November in a move which was carried without a formal vote and amidst loud opposition. Anna Gillam asked the Chairman of Transparency International PNG Peter Aitsi how the recent events in parliament were being received.
