Plight of mentally ill prisoners sparks NSW Coalition reform pledge

The NSW Coalition has turned its back on the typical “tough on crime” battle that has marked many State elections. Shadow Attorney General Greg Smith has said if elected next March, he’ll slash the number of prisoners in NSW by diverting those with mental health concerns to other institutions. It’s a significant change welcomed by many advocates of prisoners who suffer from mental illness. Michael Kermode spoke to Eileen Baldry, expert in prisoner issues and associate professor in the school of social sciences and international studies at the University of NSW.
