The recent state government elections in New South Wales and Queensland, resulting in a change to conservative governments in both states, saw a big drop in the number of women represented in their parliaments. According to an online article by Meghan B. Hopper in The Hoopla this week, the percentage of women in Australian parliaments is lower than that of Cuba, Nicaragua and Rwanda. One of the problems with having a female Prime Minister and Governor General, she writes, if that many (mainly male) commentators think the feminists’ battle is won, with nothing left to fight for.
