Plans for refugee resettlement in Cambodia

The first group of asylum seekers to be granted refugee status in Nauru have now been released into the community. It is likely that they will be given the option of resettlement in Cambodia, if a deal currently being negotiated by the Australian government is signed. The plan is being condemned by refugee advocates, questioning the appropriateness of sending refugees to a country with high levels of poverty and corruption, and a poor human rights record.
The deal is yet to be signed, and details have not been released, but Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has confirmed that his country would be willing to accept refugees.
