Counter-terrorism has dominated the agenda in Parliament and the media today, but there’s another bill that is being discussed in Parliament. While the counter terrorism bill seeks to prevent people from visiting dangerous and conflict-ridden areas, the bill we’re about to discuss can actually force a person into these kinds of areas, against their will. Former Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock addressed parliament today, advocating the bill, that states if an asylum seeker can’t prove a risk of persecution higher than fifty percent, they won’t be eligible for a complimentary protection visa.
