Perjury lands Marcus Einfeld in prison
It wasn’t refusing to pay a speeding fine that has landed former Justice Marcus Einfeld in prison. Einfeld was arrested in March 2007 for knowingly making a false statement under oath when he lied to get out of paying the $77 fine. He was subsequently convicted of 13 offences. Supreme Court Justice Bruce James, in passing sentence on Einfeld said he had committed deliberate, pre-meditated perjury, that was part of planned criminal activity. Einfeld lost his commission as a Queens Counsel in November 2008, and last week was sentenced to 3 years in prison, with a non parole period of 2 years. Is this sentence too harsh? Earlier today I spoke to law students at the University of Sydney, where Einfeld studied, about whether they thought the sentence was too severe.
