The death in custody of Mulrunji on Palm Island in 2004 is a story that never seems to end. Today it’s back in the headlines with the news that the policeman linked to his death, Sergeant Chris Hurley, received a very large insurance payout after riots on the island destroyed his house , and that that payment was kept secret. Palm Island Mayor Alfred Lacey said islanders are taking the news calmly but will be asking for compensation also for damage and trauma suffered at the hands of SWAT teams during the riots.
